Calculation Logic
How this calculator turns your answers into the final savings figure, step by step, following the same calculation rules as the original Tally form.
Step 1 · Determine the FICA Type (Q2 Gross Wages)
- Gross Wages of $192,300 or less → FICA Type 1 (rate 7.65%)
- Gross Wages over $192,300 up to $200,000 → FICA Type 2 (rate 1.45%)
- Gross Wages over $200,000 → FICA Type 3 (rate 2.35%)
Step 2 · Allowable HSA Contribution Limit (Q3 Coverage + Q4 Age 55 or Older)
- Self-Only → $4,500 / Family → $9,000
- If age 55 or older (Yes), add $1,000 to the limit
- Room left to contribute:
Remaining = Limit − Employer Contribution (Q5) − Your Contribution (Q6) - If Remaining drops below 0, the over-contribution error is shown.
Step 3 · Tax Savings on Your Own Contribution (Q1 Bracket × Q6)
Income Tax Savings = Your Contribution × Marginal Tax Rate
FICA Tax Savings = Your Contribution × FICA Rate (7.65% / 1.45% / 2.35% by Type)
FICA Tax Savings = Your Contribution × FICA Rate (7.65% / 1.45% / 2.35% by Type)
Step 4 · Premium Savings (Q7 Frequency × Q8 and Q9 Premiums)
- Pay periods per year: Weekly 52 / Bi-weekly 26 / Semi-Monthly 24 / Monthly 12
HDHP Annual Cost = Q8 × Pay Periods Per Year,Other Plan Annual Cost = Q9 × Pay Periods Per YearHSA Premium Savings = Other Plan Annual Cost − HDHP Annual Cost(if the HDHP costs more, a warning is shown instead and the savings are $0)- Premiums are paid pre-tax through payroll, so a higher premium lowers taxable income more. Paying the higher non-HDHP premium would have cut payroll (FICA) tax by more, and that extra FICA saving is given up when you choose the HDHP:
NonHDHP Premium FICA Savings = Premium Savings × FICA Rate. It is therefore subtracted in the total below.
Step 5 · Total Savings
Total Savings = Employer Contribution (Q5) + FICA Tax Savings + Income Tax Savings
+ HSA Premium Savings − NonHDHP Premium FICA Savings
+ HSA Premium Savings − NonHDHP Premium FICA Savings
- The employer contribution (Q5) is not a tax saving, but it is money that lands in your HSA, so it is added to the total as-is.
- The NonHDHP Premium FICA Savings is subtracted, not added: because premiums are deducted pre-tax, the greater non-HDHP premiums would have lowered taxable income (and therefore FICA tax) by more. Choosing the HDHP means giving up that extra FICA saving, so it counts against the total.
- State income tax savings are not included in this calculation.
